The APB Foundation Signature Art Prize 2008, Singapore was held on 11th July. Indian artist Iranna GR’s work titled ‘Wounded Tools’ is one of the ten finalist works. Now Iranna is eligible to win one of the following awards on 14th October: the Grand Prize (SGD $45,000), one of three Juror’s Prizes (SGD$10,000), and/or the People’s Choice Award (SGD $10,000). You may vote for Iranna GR to win the prize.

The Ethics of Encounter at Soul Flower, Bangkok

An interesting group show of eight internationally acclaimed contemporary Indian and Thailand artists, titled ‘The Ethics of Encounter’ will be opened on 16th August 2008 at the Gallery Soul Flower, Bangkok, Thailand. Curated by Pandit Chanrochanakit and Brian Curtin, the show explores how two cultures, of India and Thailand, once related and now separated yet conjoined by historical affinities make interface in the contemporary times. The show features the works of Ranbir Kaleka, Vidya Kamat, Manjunath Kamath, Sudsiri Pui-Ock, Navin Rawanchaikul, Pinaree Sanpitak, Rirkrit Tiravanija and Chintan Upadhyay. The show will be on view till 27th September 2008.

Bioscope, the Best Asian Film

‘Bioscope’, a feature film directed by the noted artist K.M.Madhusudhanan received the Netpac Award for the Best Asian Film in the recently concluded Osian’s Cinefan Asian and Arab Film Festival. Madhusudhanan, an accomplished painter has been working in the medium of short films for the last fifteen years. A National Film Development Corporation production, ‘Bioscope’ has already been invited to many international film festivals.

Video Wednesdays@Gallery Espace Launched

An ambitious video art project named ‘Video Wednesdays@Gallery Espace’ is launched in New Delhi’s Gallery Espace on 30th July 2008. On the last Wednesday of every month, four artists with their representative video works are presented in the project. Conceived as a part of the outreach and community program of Gallery Espace, the project is curated by JohnyML. First session had the videos of Ranbir Kaleka, Gigi Scaria, Tushar Jog and Vishal Dar. The August session (on (27th August) will have the videos of Rohini Devshar, Koumudi Patil, Sharmila Samant and Hemali Bhuta.

Distance and Proximity at Vadehra, New Delhi
After Picasso in 2005 and Freud, Bacon, Souza and Mehta in 2006, Vadehra Art Gallery opens its 2008 season with yet another landmark international exhibition of German photography titled Distance and Proximity.

In collaboration with Goethe Institut/ Max Mueller Bhavan, New Delhi, Distance and Proximity is dedicated to the clear, austere vision of the famous German photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher, who taught at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art for two decades (1976 – 1996), and their equally famous students – Thomas Ruff, Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer, Axel Hütte, Simone Nieweg, Jörg Sasse, Thomas Struth and Petra Wunderlich.  The exhibition presents 76 original works of varying sizes all done in the years between 1967 and 1992.

The exhibition has successfully toured Karachi and Kolkata. Part of a larger exhibition series, 'Photography in Germany from 1850 to the Present', the exhibition has been conceived and organized by curator Wulf Herzogenrath and Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (IFA).

CURRENT at Gallery SKE, Bangalore
‘Current’ a group of show of four young artists opened at Gallery SKE, Bangalore on 20th July 2008. CURRENT features works by four young artists (Sreshta Premnath, Minam A., Sakshi Gupta, and Avinash Veeraraghavan) with current practices and creative vocabularies. The premise they were presented with was a simple one: the artists were invited to respond to the word “current” with it’s various implications—of wind, water and electric currents and the quality of being immediate and contemporary. Each of the four artists approached the idea with his/her own specific biases and predilections. The show will be on view till 25th August 2008.

Running Amok at Seagull,Kolkata

Revisit by Rajan Krishnan at OED, Kochi
Well known contemporary artist Rajan Krishnan makes a ‘Revisit’ to his early project Ore-Substances of Earth in a specially curated show titled ‘REVISIT’ at the Gallery OED, Basement, Kochi. Conceptualized by JohnyML, the show will have videos, documents, photographs, paintings and drawings. The show will open on 2nd August 2008.
